Karolinska Institutet, Dept. of Oncology-Pathology, Research Group Lehtiö

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Karolinska Institutet – SciLifeLab/Clinical Proteomics Mass Spectrometry
The position is within the regional and the national core facilities led by Professor Janne Lehtiö, located at the Science for Life Laboratory in Solna. The regional core facility is tasked with aiding users of Swedish universities and industries with mass spectrometry based proteomics projects. The national facility (SciLifeLab/BioMS) offers infrastructure for biological mass spectrometry (www.bioms.se). There are thee nodes and the Stockholm node offers analytical techniques within proteogenomics and chemical proteomics. The facilities offers a unique research infrastructure and expertise with focus on mass spectrometry based proteomics and proteogenomics. Our robust, highly sensitive techniques allow us to identify and quantify thousands of different proteins within a single sample.
The Mass spectrometry platform is equipped with the latest peptide separation techniques and MS instrumentation including a suite of mass spectrometers with complementary characteristics. The instrument platform consists of a plurality of high-resolution LC-MS instruments for proteomics and post-translational modification. The MS-platform facility provides fee-for-service sample analysis as well as support to plan and perform larger in depth proteomics projects.
The core facility works in close collaboration with Prof. Janne Lehtiö’s research group, where MS based proteomics methods are constantly developed and applied to studies aiming at improving individual cancer therapy. This collaboration is a prerequisite for the core facility’s ability to offer services at the forefront of MS based proteomics. We are looking for a senior research engineer or equivalent for our Mass Spectrometry core facility.

Job Description / Duties
The responsibilities accompanying this position include sample preparation, bio analytical work, analysis and reporting of protein/peptide expression, method development, and continuous maintenance of the machinery; ranging from easier maintenance and calibration of LC-MS systems to more advanced troubleshooting and cleaning of the instruments. The position also includes coordination of core facility projects, some collaborative projects including meeting bookings and follow-up. We would like you to have long experience of mass spectrometry as an analytical method and hands-on experience in maintenance (preferably high resolution mass spectrometers, e.g Thermo Q-exactive HF, LTQ Orbitrap velos). Experience in method development, data analysis and reporting is meritorious.
The research engineer will be part of a research infrastructure, working closely with project scientists, postdoctoral fellows, PhD-students, undergraduate students, and external users/customers within academia and industry.
Important aspects of the job include:
• Preparation of in vivo and in vitro samples for proteomics (FASP and SP3)
• Strong Phase Extraction chromatography methods (e.g. SCX)
• Experimental analysis of samples by mass spectrometry
• Daily maintanance of the mass spectrometry instrument park
• Development of methods for nanoLC-MS analysis of peptides in collaboration with internal and external users
• Compiling and analyzing proteomics data
• Use of bioinformatics tools (R programming)
• Continuous contact with customers by email and phone

The work involves a combination of flexible and routine tasks and places a great emphasis on independence, initiative, precision, and planning. The position involves a variety of tasks in a stimulating research environment. Nice and helpful colleagues contribute to a good working environment within the group. A large part of the job may be contact with customers/researchers from a wide range of fields, which is an exciting, interesting and instructive part of the work. The group sits in the Science for Life Laboratory with spacious and modern facilities.

The successful candidate should have:
• PhD degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology or in a related field
• Research experience using MS-based proteomics and native protein MS.
• Extensive hands on experience in the laboratory and ability to follow SOPs in daily work
• Competence/experience in MS-based clinical proteomics research
• Experience in MS as an analytical method.
• Ability to analyze proteomics data
• Hands-on experience with nano-LC and MS instruments
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Good knowledge (both speaking and writing) of English

• Data management and data services
• Experience in core facility work
• Experience of purchasing and procurement

We place great emphasis on personal suitability. To succeed in the role, it is important that the applicant is development oriented and has personal drive. The applicant should be responsible, have a great sense of service, appreciate daily, detailed work as well as have the ability to see the big picture. The applicant should be an effective communicator, have good organizational skills, and be able to prioritize at times when the workload is high. The applicant should be able to collaborate with people of different backgrounds and at different levels (both within the group and with users from various disciplines).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system. This is a permanent position starting with a 6 months trial period.
