Department of Medicine, Solna, Rheumatology division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Department
Division of Rheumatology is located at Center of Molecular Medicine (CMM) with multiple research groups and research focused on clinical and translational studies of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, IIM, etc. The range of scientific areas includes immunology, cell biology, genetics and epigenetics. Division contributes to collection of samples in the biobank that together with new omics technologies makes possible extensive integration of the big data related to disease development, treatment response, prognosis and comorbidities in rheumatic diseases.

Duties
Major responsibility is in developing strong and goal-oriented bioinformatics support and coordination of related projects between groups within Rheumatology Division. Successful candidate will be responsible for design, management and evaluation of the projects related to generation and integration of the big data in studying of mechanisms of autoimmune diseases, prognosis of disease development and treatment outcomes prediction. These projects will include, but are not limited, to data generation by genome-wide genotyping, whole genome sequencing, DNA methylation studies, transcriptomics in human tissues and in single cells. Supervising of students and postdocs is a part of duty when it relates to bioinformatics and interaction between wet and dry labs. Based on these activities, it is expected that high quality scientific publications will be generated and additional funds will be attracted by this person within the time of work.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for four (4) years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements
The applicant should have PhD in area of genetics of autoimmune diseases, and more than 25 published scientific articles (original work and reviews) with at least 10 as a first author. General knowledge in genetics, genetic epidemiology, bioinformatics and cell biology should be confirmed either through basic education or by contribution to the area with published articles. The applicant should be able to design and to perform experimental work with genotyping and transcriptomics in wet lab using modern techniques and to analyze data with subsequent software and statistical methods. S/he should perform bioinformatics analyses, including GWAS, transcriptomics (including single-cell) and interaction analyses with available tools and be able to modify and adapt these tools to everyday practice. Good knowledge in R and Python programming is obligatory. Additionally, the applicant should understand background clinical information for selected rheumatic diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, IIM and SSc and demonstrate strong communication skills for collaboration in clinical environment.

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position of assistant professor. Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. Special grounds refer to illness or parental leave.

Bases of assessment
Major evaluation criteria for the applicant will be the contemporary level of his/her scientific expertise in biomedicine and specifically in area of genetics of autoimmune diseases and bioinformatics. Personal involvement in planning of research projects, setting up collaborative work and managing interinstitutional and international collaborations are important criteria too. Candidate’s research efficiency and accuracy in publishing of research are essential. The candidate should be fluent in English and has ability to communicate in multiethnic environment.

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in Swedish/ English: curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system

In order to be promoted to Senior Lecturer after an assessment by the Recruitment Committee, the applicant must meet the criteria below. The Assistant Professor can choose between two different promotion tracks; promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on Research or promotion to Senior Lecturer with focus on Education and research.

Promotion of Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer with focus on Research

Assessment criteria

  1. Senior Lecturer expertise according to the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria for “Senior lecturer with focus on research”.
  2. Grants obtained as principal applicant in national or international competition that covers the applicant’s own salary for at least two years from the final date of employment as an Assistant Professor. Project funding obtained in national or international competition (i.e. excellence grants obtained from the Swedish Research Council, European Research Council (ERC), Wallenberg Foundation (WAF) or Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) that covers costs for salaries, rent, materials and other project-related expenses for the research for at least two years from the final date of employment as an Assistant Professor.
  3. First and/or senior author of a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles published in leading international scientific journals over a number of years after dissertation, with the emphasis on the qualification period as an Assistant Professor.
  4. An independent research line deemed by independent experts and departmental management to offer excellent future potential for both the individual researcher and the department in question.
  5. A documented good ability to lead the own research group – including staff responsibility and supervision of doctoral and/or postdoctoral students. Scientific expertise is emphasized when assessing applicants including successful scientific results in a good working climate, as well as documented collaborative abilities.
  6. All experience of undertaking assignments on behalf of the scientific community – such as board membership, internal assessment committees, departmental duties, organising courses and conferences and editorships – will be considered as merits.

Promotion of Assistant Professor to Senior Lecturer with focus on Education and research
