Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine, KI, Hong Kong

Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine (MWLC) aims to contribute to the improvement of human health by conducting cutting-edge research in reparative medicine and related subjects, by creating a new platform for synergies between academia and innovation in Sweden and Hong Kong as well as China, and fostering future leaders in both academia and industry.

Description of research environment and area

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow position in Systems Biology and Bioinformatics at MWLC in Hong Kong.

MWLC aims to contribute to the improvement of human health by conducting cutting-edge research in reparative medicine and related subjects, by creating a new platform for synergies between academia and innovation in Sweden and Hong Kong as well as China, and fostering future leaders in both academia and industry. MWLC of KI has two nodes, one in Hong Kong and one in Stockholm, currently with 4 and 7 scientific teams, respectively, specializing in different aspects of reparative medicine. The eleven teams closely interact as one centre for collaborative efforts via a series of workshops and seminars interchangeably held in Hong Kong and Stockholm, as well as other routine investigator-initiated communications.

The successful applicant for the position will be part of a team of three experienced bioinformaticians, embedded in a dynamic bioinformatics environment at Hong Kong node of MWLC (which includes a single-cell profiling division).

While located in Hong Kong, the applicant will participate in projects of the following research groups at the Stockholm node:

  • Dr Simon Elsässer’s group focuses on epigenetic regulation of pluripotency and development, combining chemical biology tools with genomics and epigenomics methods. To this end, the group develops new profiling methods to quantitatively capture epigenome dynamics in during stem cell differentiation and reprogramming. Further, the group aims to elucidate the function of short peptides encoded by short open reading frames.
  • The goal of Dr Ning Xu Landén’s research is to develop novel RNA-based treatments to improve healing of human skin wounds. The recent discovery of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) as powerful gene regulators provides hope to develop novel RNA-based treatments for a wide variety of diseases.
  • The main focus of Dr Fredrik Lanner’s group is to explore how pluripotent stem cells are regulated in the human embryo and how embryonic stem cells could be used for treatment of age-related macular degeneration.

You will participate in the experimental planning, processing, analysis, integration and publication of next- generation sequencing (NGS) data including quantitative ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq, TT-Seq, chromosome interactome data and proteomics. The tasks will include statistical analysis, meta-analysis and data modeling. You will also work together with other members of the team and with collaborators. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential for this position.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for a highly motivated person interested in the area of research of the MWLC. The candidate should have a collaborative approach to research, working productively in a team. We welcome applications from candidates with PhD degree in Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or relevant fields.

Required skills of the successful candidate are:

  • firm knowledge in R, Unix/Linux, Perl, Python
  • experience in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data
  • experience in pipeline development and data management
  • knowledge of relevant biological areas (chromatin and gene expression, genetics and epigenetics)
  • experience in MatLab, Mathematica or related programming languages is an advantage
  • excellent knowledge in biostatistics
  • experience in data genomics data mining and visualization
  • proficiency in written and spoken English

Documented experience required in at least one of the following areas:

  • high-throughput screen deconvolution (genome editing including CRISPR-based, etc)
  • comparative genomics
  • systems biology
  • integration of multiple genomics, epigenomics or proteomics datasets
  • modelling of biological systems

The employment

This is a two-year full-time position, with the possibility of renewal.

The assignment is located at MWLC, Hong Kong, and the employment will follow local labour laws in Hong Kong.

A competitive remuneration package including 10% on top of basic salary (fully-taxable) intended as pension will be offered in addition to MPF employer’s contribution and medical benefits.

Entry requirement

Qualified to be employed as a Postdoctoral researcher is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A personal letter highlighting previous scientific accomplishments, technical expertise and motivation why the candidate is interested in joining MWLC
  • Curriculum vitae (max 3 pages, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, selected publications, previous academic positions, academic title and current position, academic)
  • Name, position and email of 2 references

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
