The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Researh group
A Postdoctoral position is open in Dr. Linda Lindström’s research group. The research group focuses on breast cancer research and to further understand the risk for women diagnosed with breast cancer to die from their disease. This is important because breast cancer is the most common cancer and one of the main causes of death in women. Breast cancer is however a diverse disease both in the sense of metastatic capacity as well as time to fatal disease. In particular for some breast cancer subtypes, patients have a long-term increased risk to die from the disease spanning more than 20 years after diagnosis. A variety of approaches are used in the Lindström group to answer research questions, and the group conducts studies by annotating information on patient and tumor characteristics in patient cohorts and clinical studies.

The group frequently collaborates with national and international research groups with a translational mindset. For instance Dr. Lindström is the Chairman of the Swedish breast cancer network SweTRIBE including both preclinical and clinical researchers.

Duties
We are currently initiating several research studies. In one study we will continue our research initiatives on breast cancer intra-tumor heterogeneity as associated with aggressive breast cancer disease (Lindström et al, JNCI 2018). In this study we will use several approaches to further understand intra-tumor heterogeneity of breast cancer tumors. One of the projects will focus on imaging of tumor slides to assess heterogeneity and in another project we will use single-cell sequencing to annotate information on gene expression on single breast cancer tumor cells. We are also currently annotating two clinical trials with genomic information and tumor characteristics to determine which factors that are associated with long-term survival in women diagnosed with breast cancer. The goal of the projects is to identify patients at high and very low risk (Esserman and Lindström et al, JAMA Oncology 2017) for fatal disease in order to already at diagnosis be able to improve clinical management and survival for breast cancer patients.

The Postdoctoral researcher will have the leading role in at least one of the projects and will in that project be responsible for the statistical analytical work, logistics, planning, as well as scientific article writing and data presentation etc.

The position is for 2 years with a possible extension of 2 years.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.

Skills and personality
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate with a clear interest in statistical analysis and breast cancer research. Since the Postdoctoral researcher will work and communicate scientific findings in an interdisciplinary and international environment, good communication and writing skills in English are very important.

The applicant should have a mathematical and/or statistical undergraduate education and it is considered an advantage if the applicant also has documented knowledge of relevance to the area of research such as:

  • Documented experience in working with applied data analyses involving multidimensional data of epidemiological nature (for example patient cohorts or registry data)
  • Documented subject knowledge of breast cancer
  • Knowledge in high throughput analysis such as gene expression (microarray) or RNA/ DNA sequence analysis
  • Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to the project.
