Applications are invited for a doctoral student position in cerebrovascular and experimental stroke research with Dr. Linda Fredriksson at the division of Vascular Biology. Our research group is based at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. At present the Division of Vascular Biology consists of four research groups providing an international competitive and vibrant scientific environment. Our research team has access to state-of-the-art experimental animal models, resources in molecular and cell biology, as well as imaging technologies.

Our research is focused on understanding how cerebrovascular remodeling and a breached blood-brain barrier contribute to brain injury, especially during stroke, and whether these cerebrovascular changes are potentiated by the metabolic syndrome. We believe that targeting biological processes in the neuro-vascular interphase to restore barrier integrity has the potential to improve outcome after a stroke. The research addresses a highly significant and increasingly burdensome health challenge. This is illustrated by the millions of people suffering a stroke each year, a number that are expected to rise partly due to an increased prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, and the limited treatment options available. The project specifically aims to understand the molecular mechanism of growth factor signaling in regulation of blood-brain barrier permeability, cellular response and hemorrhagic conversion of an ischemic stroke, with the goal to translate our preclinical findings into clinical use. Towards this goal, based on our earlier preclinical findings a randomized controlled phase II clinical trial was recently completed, demonstrating a novel and efficient treatment paradigm for improving neurological outcome in stroke.

Together we will explore the underlying mechanisms of the metabolic syndrome and stroke outcome as well as the bleeding side effects associated with thrombolytic therapy. We will seek to identify novel targets to fight stroke and work towards the goal that the mortality and morbidity after stroke is reduced. We have novel ideas as well as the financial and technical resources needed to realize the project and all that is missing is you.You are expected to be a talented and enthusiastic researcher with strong drive to perform basic research. You are expected to play a strong role in the elaboration of scientific hypothesis, experimental design, experimentation, and presentation/publication of results in scientific publications and in a PhD thesis. You will work in a team together with other lab members and regularly present the research work in meetings, seminars and at international conferences. The work will include the use of genetically modified mouse models and experimental models of stroke. We will use a wide range of cell and molecular biological techniques as well as biochemical assays and gene arrays. To understand the dynamic processes of a compromised blood-brain barrier during stroke and disease outcome we will develop new models both for live cell and in vivo confocal imaging. For this we will use a repertoire of fluorescent reporter models and tracer studies. 

Entry requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated, well organized, driven, inquisitive, enthusiastic person interested in our area of research, whom is ready to explore new avenues in science. The candidate should have a high degree of independence but should also show a collaborative approach to research and be able to work productively in a team. Experience with laboratory work, in particular analysis of animal models, immunohistochemical techniques and microscopy is meritorious. Furthermore, the applicant should be fluent in English. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability and previous experience of laboratory work.

 To meet the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies, an applicant must have:

  1.  taken a second-cycle qualification
  2. completed course requirements for at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 second cycle higher education credits, or
  3. otherwise acquired essentially the same knowledge in or outside Sweden.

An applicant who met the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies before 1 July 2007 is regarded as having met the current requirements, though no longer than until the end of June 2015.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from third-cycle studies. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:

- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research

- Analytical skill

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to third-cycle studies in the subject

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
