Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för medicin, Solna, Clinical Epidemiology division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Unit of Clinical Epidemiology (KEP)
Research at MedS and KEP combines clinical, epidemiological, and computational expertise with the aim to improve the understanding and treatment of a broad range of medical conditions. We focused on translational research studies to improve prediction of disease onset, treatment effects, and disease outcomes.

We are seeking a bioinformatician/computational biologist to support large-scale genetic, metagenomic and other “omics”-type of research in the field of gastrointestinal (GI) disease (PI Mauro D’Amato, http://ki.se/en/people/maudam), with focus on the genetic causes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, also see www.bellygenes.org) and other GI conditions.

Duties
The successful candidate will be responsible for the analysis of high-throughput  molecular data (primarily genetic, but also epigenetic, transcriptomic, metagenomic etc) coming from large cohorts of GI disease patients. He/she will also be responsible for the reporting of project results to colleagues within the international collaborative network, and at international meetings.

The position, which is based at a new GI research team at the Center for Molecular Medicine (www.cmm.ki.se) is available immediately for 2 years, with the possibility for extension

Entry requirements

  • Experienced user of R/Bioconductor, Python and programming languages. Unix environments and high-performance computing clusters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bioinformatic and computational approaches to the study of human genetics and “omics”, and good understanding of “biology” (biological questions)
  • Demonstrated experience in handling large datasets (primarily GWAS), and/or to work with different type of genetic, epigenetic (DNA methylation, miRNA), transcriptomic and metagenomic data,
  • Good knowledge of data integration, multivariate analyses, meta-analyses
  • Additional background in statistics, machine learning and/or predictive analytics is a plus
  • Team-work attitude, impeccable organizational skills, and previous participation in international research activities/projects/publications
