Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för fysiologi och farmakologi

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. Division
The research at The Section of Pharmacogenetics (http://ki.se/en/fyfa/pharmacogenetics) at the Department aims to understand the basis for liver diseases and to identify the genetic origin for differences between individuals in drug metabolism, toxicity and drug response. We in collaboration with others strive to understand liver de-differentiation and re-differentiation and to develop novel in vitro systems for predicting drug response and adverse drug reactions as well as to develop In vitro liver systems suitable for drug screening. The research is financed from e.g. ERC, Vinnova, EU (H2020) and The Swedish Research Council.

Duties
We are looking for a post doc fellow who will work with an in vitro model for liver disease. The project focuses on use of complex multicellular 3D spheroid systems for identification of interventions of liver diseases like NAFLD, NASH and liver fibrosis. Using the 3D liver spheroid system composed of hepatocytes and non-parenchymal cells we mimic the different liver diseases and examine the mechanism behind using transcriptomic, proteomic and metabonomic analyses. We also screen different drugs and conditions for treating the induced diseases. The work includes to produce the liver spheroids from cryopreserved cells, cultivation of these systems and evaluating the effects of different conditions and drugs on disease development and treatment. The system is described in https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27143246

Entry requirements
Scholarships for carrying out postdoctoral research may be granted to persons living in other countries who come to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships from KI. Qualified to be admitted as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a PhD degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, physiology or similar. The applicant is expected to have a good understanding of biochemical, molecular biology, cell biology and/or genetic techniques, good communication skills and good proficiency in spoken and written English. The applicant should have extensive experience of cell biology work including at least on publications as a first author in papers in this area.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt.

The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj )
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or studentorganisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
