Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för neurobiologi, vårdvetenskap och samhälle

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2017 of 470 million SEK. It comprises eight divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division of Neurogeriatrics belongs to the internationally leading Center for Alzheimer Research. The assistant researcher will be working in the research group led by prof Angel Cedazo-Minguez, which is located in NOVUM, beside the Karolinska University Hospital at Huddinge. Angel Cedazo-Minguez group currently consists of 8 people, students, postdoc and assistant professors with different backgrounds, educationally as well as culturally.

The research assistant will work for 1 year under the supervision of Silvia Maioli in projects related to the role of cholesterol metabolites in Alzheimer’s disease, with a strong focus on molecular studies and behavioral studies in mice models.

A major task for the candidate will be to contribute to the research of the group. In particular, the candidate is request to take part to behavioural studies on different animal models of aging and cholesterol metabolism and to molecular studies on neurons from primary cultures.

The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility and be able to work in a team. Moreover, the candidate is expected to have good knowledge and expertise in Alzheimer’s disease, cholesterol metabolites and neurosteroid signalling.

A person is eligible if he or she has been awarded a Degree, preferably in Pharmacy and a Master Degree in biotechnology.

We seek for a person with one-year experience in a biomedical lab and with a background in the field of neurodegeneration, neurosteroids, cholesterol metabolism and Alzheimer’s Disease.

The project involves a wide range of molecular and cellular technologies and has a strong translational focus. Good expertise in molecular biology and techniques such as western blot, ELISA, PCR, isolation and culture of hippocampal neurons from rat embryos is required. Additionally, experience in neurobehavioral studies in mice (in particular spatial and non spatial memory tests) is preferred. Having obtained a FELASA B certificate would be considered an advantage.  Excellent collaborative, communication and writing skills are needed. Very good English skills in speaking and writing are an absolute requirement for the position.
