The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Research group and project
A Postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Rune Toftgård from 1st of April 2018 or later. The employee will work with Assistant Professor Leander Blaas, whose research is centered around mammary gland progenitor cells and their role in breast cancer pathogenesis and heterogeneity. The work is focused on, but not limited to, understanding the cells-of-origin and molecular events that underlie the development of diverse breast cancer subtypes.

The successful applicant will perform studies into this research topic and continue work on our recent finding that Lgr6 expressing mammary gland progenitor cells are potent cells-of-origin for mammary tumors (Blaas et al., 2016, Nature Cell Biology, PMID: 7798604). In light of findings that the Lgr6 locus is associated with aggressive breast tumors the postdoc will expand our mouse studies to human breast tissue. For this purpose, he/she will apply routine and advanced molecular and cell biology techniques, such as 3D confocal microscopy, mammalian tissue culture, tumour cell transplantation, molecular cloning, western blotting, and FACS.

The candidate will also be involved in developing an innovative approach of genome-engineered human breast organoids to study the mechanisms underlying breast cancer heterogeneity.

The position is for 2 years with possibility for extension.

We are seeking a goal-oriented colleague who thrives in an interdisciplinary and international environment. We expect applicants to have demonstrated knowledge and experience in molecular and cell biology techniques. Practical skills/experience of working with mice are advantageous but not a must.

Ideal candidates are able to interact closely with the supervisor but, at the same time, are capable of independently progressing the project.

Strong communication skills and English proficiency, both written and spoken, are required.

You will be supervised by and work alongside with Leander Blaas. You are expected to closely interact with our team and diverse collaborators. You will work on several projects and present your data at national and international conferences. Furthermore, you will participate in the general duties of the lab and contribute with a positive attitude to the success of the research team.

The applicant is expected to apply for competitive national and international postdoctoral fellowships and will receive support in these endeavors.
