Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för laboratoriemedicin

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 6 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

A position for an assistant professor in experimental nephrology is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jaakko Patrakka at Karolinska Institute (KI) / AstraZeneca (AZ) Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre (ICMC), Stockholm, Sweden. ICMC represents a unique opportunity for academic researchers to collaborate with scientists from the pharmaceutical industry to make cutting edge science and discover the next generation of medicines. More information about ICMC can be found at http://ki.se/en/medh/integrated-cardio-metabolic-centre-icmc.

The focus of the project is to explore molecular mechanisms behind glomerular diseases, with special emphasis on diabetic nephropathy. The ultimate goal is, in collaboration with AstraZeneca, to identify novel therapeutical targets and to develop new pharmaceutical compounds to treat kidney disease. We perform high throughput molecular profiling of human kidney biopsies and use primarily mouse and cell culture as experimental models.

We are seeking enthusiastic applicants who are experienced in working with human and mouse kidney tissue. Previous experience in isolating and culturing renal podocyte cells is required. Experience with phenotyping kidney mouse models is also a necessity. Moreover, the candidate should be familiar with induction of different glomerular disease models in mouse. Candidates should have a proven publication record. The selected candidate will work as part of a team, in close collaboration with postdocs and graduate students.
