The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) carries out both preclinical and clinical research within numerous fields. Linked to the department are approximately 450 researchers, postgraduate students, teachers and technical & administrative staff and we currently have about 150 PhD students. The department is conducting undergraduate courses for medical students, physiotherapist students, biomedicine students and biomedical laboratory students.

The overall research objective is to understand signal transduction in the pancreatic islet cells in health and disease.

The successful applicant is expected to work on a project aiming at understanding the paracrine signaling profile within intact pancreatic islets in vivo, and its impact on insulin secretion from beta cells as well as overall glucose metabolism. In particular, the applicant is expected to study the dynamic interactions between islet beta cells and vascular cells, and the signaling plasticity under physiological and diabetic conditions.

Entry requirements
The division of Signal Transduction is recruiting a highly motivated candidate with combined expertise in both islet biology and vascular biology. Solid background in endothelial cell physiology and regulation of islet vascularization, as well as an extensive experience in laboratory animal research are mandatory.
An ideal candidate should hold a Ph.D. in biology, and at least five years of postdoctoral experience in beta cell physiology at an internationally recognized research environment. The applicant should have excellent communication and presentation skills (written/spoken) in English.
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with some or all of the following methods and techniques:

  • Isolation of pancreatic islets from small rodents and transplantation into the anterior chamber of rodent eyes for monitoring islet function longitudinally in vivo;
  • In vitro and in vivo imaging with confocal and two-photon microscopy for studying islet cell signal transduction, including measuring intracellular [Ca2+] in islet cells;
  • Image processing and data analysis using software including Volocity, Imaris, Image J and Prism;
  • Molecular cloning and generation of imaging tools, such as biosensors for the study of intra-islet signal transduction;
  • Laboratory animal experimental techniques, including blood sampling, intraperitoneal glucose and insulin tolerance test;
  • Functional islet studies, including measurements of islet insulin secretion in response to stimulation with various compounds under static and dynamic perfusion conditions;
  • Histological studies in small rodents (including classic dissection and micro-dissection techniques, tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry/ immunofluorescence staining);
  • Cell culture and functional cell assays in beta cell lines and primary endothelial cells;
  • Protein detection techniques including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot

A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants.For this multidisciplinary position, preference will be given to candidates having prior experience in the regulation of pancreatic islet vascularization.
