We aim to identify and investigated T cells targeting unique peptides in mouse joints that is relevant in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.
It is today well known that autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, is preceded by several years of chronic activation of autoreactive T and B cells. We think that this response contains important regulatory cells and have identified T cells specific for the joint cartilage type II collagen that have regulatory function. On the basis of this discovery we are developing a vaccine to prevent and treat RA. We have also established mouse strains with human MHC class II molecules that are physiologically expressed. Using this platform we can now also identify and validate new vaccine candidate. We will also study the mechanism whereby such regulatory T cells operate and translate these findings to humans.

Training environment
The main base of the PhD education will be at the Medical Inflammation Research laboratory at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm Sweden http://www.inflam.mbb.ki.se/. The laboratory is focused on the basic studies of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, and has a well developed technology platform mainly based on immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology and a leading platform for studies of genetically modified mouse strains.

Karolinska Institute is a leading university, with courses and seminars on an international top class level. English is the prime laboratory language and English is also spoken as second language in Sweden.
