The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Description of project and work

The work will be performed in the research group of Professor Martin BERGÖ (MBE) (http://ki.se/en/bionut/caax-proteins-martin-bergo). We study basic mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and explore new therapeutic targets in cancer, accelerated aging, inflammation, and heart disease. The work is focused on, but not limited to, understanding the biochemical and medical importance of the posttranslational processing of prenylated proteins of the RAS, RHO, and nuclear lamin families; and defining the role of reactive oxygen species and antioxidants in malignant melanoma and lung cancer metastasis. To approach these issues we use genetically modified and somatically gene-edited mice, cell culture techniques, genomics, mass spectrometry, imaging, and translational and epidemiologic approaches.

The successful applicant will lead independent studies into any of those research areas but the precise projects will be defined after discussions between applicant and supervisor where the applicant’s track record, drive, interest, and ideas will be considered. The postdoc project will provide opportunities for the candidate to develop into an independent researcher, and there will be possibilities for initiating new lines of research. Moreover, the applicant will be encouraged to apply for competitive national and international postdoctoral fellowships and career grants, and will receive support in those endeavors.

The position is for 2 years with the possibility for 2 years extension.

Expectations
You will be supervised by Prof. Martin Bergö and work alongside and collaborate with a senior lab manager, an animal technician, and other postdocs and PhD and master-level students in the group. You will work on your own projects and present your data at lab meetings and national and international conferences; and you will contribute to the overall maintenance of the laboratory and the collaborative spirit of the group.

Qualifications

The applicant should hold a PhD in a related area; have extensive experience in cell biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or bioinformatics; should be able to design and conduct projects independently but should also be able to work in collaborative settings; and should possess excellent communication skills and be able to speak and write very well in English.

Entry requirement

A person  is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
