Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, translational, national and international collaborations.

Division
The successful applicant will join an interactive, multidisciplinary team, see: http://ki.se/research/selivanova website. This project is a continuation on a long and successful track record of research aimed at discovery of small molecules reactivating p53 and studies of the molecular mechanisms of p53-mediated transcriptional response (Nikulenkov et al, Insights into p53 transcriptional function via genome-wide chromatin occupancy and gene expression analysis. (2012) Cell Death Differ. 2012, 19(12):1992-2002; Grinkevich  et al. (2009) Ablation of key oncogenic pathways by RITA-reactivated p53 is required for efficient apoptosis.   Cancer Cell, 15(5):441-53;  Enge et al. (2009) MDM2-dependent downregulation of p21 and hnRNPK provides a switch between apoptosis and growth arrest induced by pharmacologically reactivated p53 (2009). Cancer Cell, 3;15(3):171-83; Issaeva et al.  (2004) Small molecule RITA binds to p53, blocks p53/HDM-2 interaction and activates p53 function in tumors. Nat Med., 10 (12), 3121-1328; Bykov et al. (2002) Restoration of the tumor suppressor function of mutant p53 by a small molecule, Nat. Med., 8 (3), 282-288.)

Duties
We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative post-doctoral scientist to investigate novel small molecules reactivating the tumor suppressor p53, a very promising target for cancer therapy. We are addressing the questions of the molecular mechanisms of p53-induced responses and life/death decision by p53. We are using high throughput technologies, such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and proteomics to identify those genes and p53 cofactors which affect the p53 transcriptional response and which are crucial for p53-dependent biological outcomes. We validate our discoveries in clinical samples and animal models. We aim to identify genes and pathways which drive resistance to p53-based therapies and use this information to test rational drug combinations in different cancers, including melanoma.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than 2-3 years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The candidate should have at least two years of experience in cancer research.

Key skill a successful candidate must possess include non-transformed and cancer cell culture; analysis of signal pathway activation by Western blot and immune fluorescence; analysis of cell cycle and cell death by flow cytometry; RNAi.  Experience in ChIP and CRISPR-Cas9 system is a bonus. Skills in gene expression analysis by qRT-PCR and/or microarrayRNA-seq are also highly desirable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  5. Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
