Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. This project is a continuation on a long and successful track record of research aimed at discovery of small molecules reactivating p53 and studies of the molecular mechanisms of p53-mediated transcriptional response (Nikulenkov et al, Insights into p53 transcriptional function via genome-wide chromatin occupancy and gene expression analysis. We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative post-doctoral scientist to investigate novel small molecules reactivating the tumor suppressor p53, a very promising target for cancer therapy. We are addressing the questions of the molecular mechanisms of p53-induced responses and life/death decision by p53. We are using high throughput technologies, such as ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and proteomics to identify those genes and p53 cofactors which affect the p53 transcriptional response and which are crucial for p53-dependent biological outcomes. We validate our discoveries in clinical samples and animal models. We aim to identify genes and pathways which drive resistance to p53-based therapies and use this information to test rational drug combinations in different cancers, including melanoma.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than 2-3 years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The candidate should have at least two years of experience in cancer research.

Key skill a successful candidate must possess include non-transformed and cancer cell culture; analysis of signal pathway activation by Western blot and immune fluorescence; analysis of cell cycle and cell death by flow cytometry; RNAi.  Experience in ChIP and CRISPR-Cas9 system is a bonus. Skills in gene expression analysis by qRT-PCR and/or microarrayRNA-seq are also highly desirable.
