Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för onkologi-patologi, Forskargrupp Farnebo

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

Research Group
The position is placed in the research group of Marianne Farnebo at Cancer Center Karolinska, CCK. Farnebo’s lab studies functions of the nuclear organelles Cajal bodies and mechanisms involved in DNA repair, and how defects in these processes contribute to cancer. A number of techniques required to study RNA-guided DNA repair are already up and running in our laboratory, like laser-micro irradiation, live-cell imaging, single-molecule RNA FISH and RNA tethering. The lab has an extensive scientific network within the field and access to clinical material relevant for the project.

Description of the project
Accumulating evidence highlight RNA processing factors as regulators of DNA repair and genome stability. However, the underlying mechanism(s) remains largely unexplored. The postdoc project will focus on characterizing the role of noncoding RNAs and RNA processing factors in DNA repair and to investigate whether these functions are altered in cancer cells, which could have implications for cancer therapy. This project is conceptually novel and expected to have important consequences on our understanding of DNA repair control, cancer development and aging.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry. He/she should also have previous experience in molecular mechanisms of noncoding RNAs and/or DNA repair and relevant techniques. To build a strong and creative research team, we are looking for high achievers from universities around the world. We will offer an intellectually stimulating environment and we look for talented people who will play a part in developing our next breakthrough ideas. Are you ready to discover the unexplored?
More specifically,

  • Applicant should have a high personal drive and motivation
  • Applicant should have innovative thinking and be eager to solve problems
  • Applicant should be efficient and able to work productively in a team
  • Applicant should be fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability

Eligibility and entry requirements
Applicants who have completed their PhD degree no more than three years before the last date for applications are given priority. Candidates who have completed their degree earlier than this should receive equal priority if special grounds exist. Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defense is scheduled to take place within three months after the application deadline, in which case verification from the Dissertation Committee or equivalent body must be submitted with the application.

Type of scholarship
Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within five years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt. The scholarships may be paid by Radiumhemmets Forskningsfonder.
This is a one year position with possible extension for two more years, starting in spring 2018.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:
- Curriculum vitae and qualifications
- A complete list of publication
- A personal letter
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances

Deadline for applications is 31/1 2018, but the recruitment process might end earlier if an interesting candidate is found before this deadline.

The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.
