Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för fysiologi och farmakologi

At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. We have around 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 90 doctoral students. Our research fields include cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, Renal System, anesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with the clinics at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research within our subjects. As a member of our team, your task will be to investigate the role of proteins, peptides (neuropeptides) and other small molecules in pain signaling using mass spectrometry. The aim is to understand the regulation of pain transmission, and intracellular signaling, that are activated or deactivated in relation to persistent pain. Work will be conducted in Dr. Camilla Svensson’s research group that has a focus on finding treatment strategies for inflammatory mediated chronic pain states. The applicant will spend part time at Karolinska Institute and part time at Uppsala University at the mass spectrometry unit located at Dept. of Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology (Akademiska Sjukhuset, Uppsala). The ultimate goal is to identify new drug targets and develop novel drug mediators for treatment of chronic pain states. To achieve this goal we also perform additional behavioral pharmacology, molecular biology and immunohistochemistry applied to both in vivo and in vitro systems. For more information please visit:

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team investigating pain mechanisms in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. The focus will be on analyzing peptides and proteins using mass spectrometry. We are working together with preclinical and clinical researchers with a mission to increase our ability to study pain from a translational aspect, from bench to bedside.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Other requirements
We seek a highly motivated candidate, with an outstanding completed PhD thesis and a strong drive for a future career in research. The candidate must have acquired expertise in the field of mass spectrometry, protein and peptide chemistry. To qualify, the candidate must possess experience within analytical techniques for separation, identification and quantification of proteins, peptides and other small molecules using nUHPLC and targeted mass spectrometry utilizing high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-SIM/PRM). A strong background bioinformatics or molecular biotechnology, corresponding to an MSc engineering degree in bioinformatics, molecular biotechnology or similar is also meriting. Good experience in sample preparation for mass spectrometry and hands on experience using high-resolution Thermo Q-Exactive LC-MS/MS is considered a merit.

We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team player to our group. You will be part of a team of various experts, so we are looking for individuals who excel at working independently and, at the same time have the interpersonal and communication skills to succeed at working in a multidisciplinary team. Apart from mass spectrometry analyses, the candidate is expected to take part of other aspects of experimentation including in vivo and in vitro work as well as presentation and preparation of publications. Personal suitability and scientific expertise is highly valued. The applicant must be proficient in English, both spoken and written.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.
