The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

A doctoral position is an available doctoral education project to which a PhD student is to be recruited. After the selection process the process for admission to doctoral education will commence. An admission decision will not be taken until an individual study plan has been approved by the departmental admission board.

Research group
The research group of Dr. Peter Swoboda, in collaboration with the research group of Prof. Juha Kere, is investigating mechanisms of ciliogenesis in human cell lines and in vivo in genetically tractable animal models, like the worm C. elegans or the zebrafish Danio rerio. Cilia are microtubule-based organelles that emanate from polarized cell surfaces. Cilia perform essential motility and sensory functions in animal development and physiology. Dysfunctional cilia result in a number of human diseases, called ciliopathies. Consequently, understanding the molecular processes by which cilia are made is of significant biomedical relevance.

The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
The project focuses on direct target genes of ciliogenic transcription factors. We aim to decipher the roles of these genes for cilia structure and function. We have collected a group of human candidate cilia genes that – upon mutation – are strong candidates for also being at the root of human brain conditions, where the molecular and cellular basis is not known. These candidate cilia genes will be analyzed by genetic mutation and RNA interference. We perform cell biology and genetics in human cell lines and in animal models, microscopy and database mining, and collaborate with human geneticists. The project intends to establish novel links between certain human brain conditions and ciliopathies.

The PhD student will be responsible for his / her own project and should be able to work well within a team of research group members and collaborators. The PhD student should under guidance be able to plan and execute experiments, analyze data, interpret and present the results as well as write scientific articles.

Entry requirements for doctoral education at KI
To be eligible for doctoral education following requirements has to be met:

General entry requirements
A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education (according to Higher Education Ordinance Chapt 7, section 39) if he/she:

  1. has been awarded advanced/second-cycle/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
  2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle/master level, or
  3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements
Proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school:
Proficiency in the English language can be documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL or IELTS, see web-link below for more information.
Applicants who meet the general entry requirements (1 or 2 above) from a university in one of the Nordic countries fulfill the requirements in English.

Skills and personal qualities
The successful applicant should have a solid background in genetics or molecular and cell biology. Desirable are undergraduate or master degrees in biomedicine, molecular or cell biology, (molecular) genetics or similar. Previous practical experience with approaches and techniques in the advertised field of study are meriting, as is previous experience in e.g. database aspects in biomedical research. A good ability to communicate in English, both in written and oral form, is required. We are seeking a talented, ambitious and highly motivated student who is able to function in an internationally competitive research group. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Assessment criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:
- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

Terms and conditions
All doctoral students at KI receive financial support during their doctoral education and employment on a doctoral studentship is the most common sort of support. During the time between recruitment and admission a short-term employment can be offered for up to 6 months.
