The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The researcher will be part of the Pulmonomics research group headed by Åsa Wheelock, at the Respiratory Medicine Unit, Part of the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), Department of Medicine Solna. For more information about the research group, please see www.cmm.ki.se/en/team/wheelock/.

Duties
We have an opening for an individual wishing to join multidisciplinary projects in systems medicine of chronic inflammation lung diseases (primarily COPD and asthma). The successful candidate will be expected to lead the bioinformatics analysis work of high throughput data from a range of omics-based studies. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g., bioinformatics, statistics, systems biology, systems medicine, computer science), with demonstrated experience in analyzing and integrating large-scale datasets. We are especially interested in candidates with prior experience in subject-based network integration of omics data from multiple molecular levels, with extensive expertise in the use of R and Bioconductor. Experience with downstream multi-molecular pathway integration is a merit. Studies will be performed in close collaboration with clinicians at the Karolinska Hospital enabling the successful candidate to be directly involved in translational systems medicine efforts. We are specifically interested in methods for sub-phenotyping of heterogeneous diseases using disparate mRNA miRNA, proteome, metabolome and microbiome data from multiple anatomical compartments to construct models of disease. The specific long-term aims of the project are to investigate the mechanisms of chronic inflammatory diseases from a systems perspective, towards the goal of understanding the etiology of disease pathology as well as its subsequent resolution.

Entry requirements

  •  PhD degree, preferably in bioinformatics, chemometrics or systems medicine/biology
  • At least 5 years post-doctoral experience after award of Ph.D.
  • Extensive experience with integration of disparate multi-omics data sets using network integration and/or similar R/Bioconductor-based integration tools
  • Good command of statistics, and experience with multivariate modeling and/or other approaches for variable selection and biomarker discovery of ‘omics data sets
  • Experience in the field of translational respiratory systems medicine
  • The successful candidate will also have excellent collaborative skills, with experience of working in multidisciplinary teams. Personal suitability and scientific competence are highly valued. Good knowledge in written and spoken English is required.

A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

An Assistant professor position is a fixed-term position. This position is for 1 year, with the possibility of extending 1 year at a time, up to a maximum of 4 years.
