Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för medicin, Solna, Enheten för mikrobiell patogenes

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

A post doc position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in virology and cell biology. The project focuses on understanding how cytomegalovirus (CMV) contributes to cancer. The applicant will be working on a collaborative basic science project of groups of professor Cecilia Söderberg-Nauclér and Professor Jiri Bartek at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. The major aim of this work is to understand, in mechanistic terms, how CMV subverts the normal cellular pathways and promotes cellular transformation. These studies will involve cell and molecular biology and virology approaches and analyses of cell phenotypes, especially in human cell culture and xenografts. Emphasis will be on major cancer-related, stem-cell and genome-integrity pathways and a particular focus on ribosomal biology for CMV-triggered tumorigenesis. Both host laboratories offer a very stimulating, internationally highly competitive environment, and state-of-the art technologies and teams of experts.

Entry requirements
The applicant should have a strong background in virology and or cell biology. This project will in particular involve studies on ribosomal function, wherefore previous work in ribosomal biology and regulation of protein translation is of high merit, as well as previous work with CMV.
