Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för neurobiologi, vårdvetenskap och samhälle

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2017 of 470 million SEK. It comprises eight divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The research group is located at Karolinska Institutet, campus Huddinge, and at SLU in Uppsala. We are currently five PhD students, two technicians, three post docs, one assistant professor, two senior scientists and a professor. The common theme of our research is the study of protein aggregation, in particular in relation to spider silks and amyloid diseases, and the development of biotechnological tools for production of aggregation prone proteins and polypeptides (including biologic drug development for lung disease).

Our group has developed a method for producing aggregation prone polypeptides, e.g. surfactant protein C (SP-C) analogues, in bacterial expression systems (Kronqvist et al. Nat Commun. 2017). The recombinant SP-C analogue is mixed with phospholipids to generate a simple artificial lung surfactant preparation. We will investigate if this lung surfactant preparation can be used to treat acute respiratory distress syndrome in animal models (rabbits and rodents). Lung surfactant spreads rapidly across the mucosal surface and may carry different pharmaceuticals, which makes it possible to develop novel local treatment regimes for lung diseases. Therefore, we also aim to mix different compounds with our artificial lung surfactant and study the spread and effects in vitro and in vivo.

The successful candidate is expected to have a large interest in experimental animal work, and preferably have a background in lung related research and protein biochemistry. The job includes production of proteins in E.coli, subsequent purification, analyses of the produced proteins and production of artificial lung surfactants. The lung surfactant will be analyzed by different methods to determine the level of lipopolysaccharides. The activity and spread of lung surfactant preparations that may include radioactively labelled molecules will be studied in animal trials using mainly rabbits and rats. In vitro work using culture of different bacterial strains and methods for determining surface activity may also be part of the duties. The applicant is also expected to supervise doctoral students and master students in the lab. We work in collaboration with other groups and very interdisciplinary, which demands the applicant to be independent, creative, have a positive attitude and be collaborative. Previous practical experience and knowledge of work with laboratory animals are required (Felasa C or equivalent).Since the project is a collaburation between KI and SLU the applicant should be prepared to visit both places in the line of work.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances. The applicant should have a doctoral degree in medicine, biochemistry, biomedicine or similar topic. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong drive to pursue experimental research, and an ambitious and innovative attitude. The project is cross-disciplinary and pursued in collaboration with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are necessary. Previous practical experience of animal studies is a requirement. Emphasis will be put on personal skills in the evaluation process. Very good ability to speak and write in English is a requirement.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.
