Department
The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises of seven units, three research centers, and a total of around 70 independent research groups. Our ambition is to be a leading department within medical research and education.

Division
The postdoc project will be conducted in prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg’s research group (http://ki.se/en/medh/malin-flodstrom-tullberg-group) at the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM, http://ki.se/en/medh/center-for-infectious-medicine).

Description of the work group/equivalent and its work/focus
The research performed in the laboratory of prof. M. Flodström-Tullberg (MFT lab) focuses on the etiology and pathogenesis of the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. The group has a special interest in common human viruses (enteroviruses) associated with development of type 1 diabetes in humans and conducts studies on mechanisms by which these viruses can cause beta cell destruction. The group is also involved in efforts to make novel enterovirus vaccines. It is a member of several national research networks including nPOD-V and Therdiab.

The MFT lab employs experimental in vitro and in vivo models and uses advanced molecular-, proteomic-, cellular- and immunological techniques to study interactions between the insulin producing beta cell, the host immune system and viruses of relevance for the etiology and pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes.

Duties
The present project focuses on developing new model systems, including iPSC-derived beta cells, for the identification of mechanisms behind beta cell damage as well as studies on how disease relevant gene polymorphisms may modulate beta cell response to environmental factors. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the scientific design and establishment of experimental protocols, generate and analyze data, present and interpret results, write scientific reports and articles in English. The tasks also include project administration and training of Ph.D. students and other members of the group in techniques assessing pancreatic beta cell function.

Qualifications
Required: A PhD (third-cycle) degree in biomedicine or biology, or comparable. Documented experiences in working with iPSC derived beta cells. Experience in translational diabetes research, cell biology techniques, ELISA based techniques, molecular biology techniques such as mRNA isolation and PCR. Applicants must possess excellent communication skills and be able to interact and work efficiently in a team. Excellent spoken and written English is required.

Desirable: Experience in handling human tissues for ex vivo cellular assays, in particular human pancreatic islets. Previous experience working with mouse models is an advantage. Experience in project management/research coordination is desirable.

A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if s/he has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Starting date and duration
The position is immediately available. The duration of the position is one year with a possible prolongation of 6 months.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.
