At the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology we teach and conduct internationally acclaimed, high-quality research in Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Intensive care. Research at the Molecular & Cellular Exercise Physiology group is aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms that mediate local and systemic adaptations to physical exercise. We are particularly interested in understanding how exercised or sedentary skeletal muscle can crosstalk with other organs, and how it can affect individual health and disease. To this end, we use in vitro and in vivo systems to dissect the regulatory mechanisms that are activated by exercise and that control the different exercise-induced adaptations. By better understanding the signal transduction and gene regulatory pathways that control local and systemic adaptations to physical exercise, we aim at developing future therapeutic strategies for the treatment of metabolic and degenerative diseases such as diabetes, obesity, sarcopenia and neuromuscular disorders. The project to be developed aims to dissect the molecular mechanisms that control muscle mass and metabolism in situations of skeletal muscle atrophy and/or hypertrophy. We have identified several potential candidates using a pre-clinical model of muscle unloading and reloading. The role of the applicant is to validate them from a functional and physiological perspective both in vitro and in vivo using recombinant viral technologies and genetic mouse models.  

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be responsible of coordinating the project being in close contact with the group leader of the laboratory. The applicant should have but not limited to the following duties:

  • Develop and coordinate experiments related with the project
  • Supervise junior laboratory staff
  • Phenotype and experimentation of laboratory animal colony
  • Collaborate with members from the lab and foster present and future collaborations
  • Keep up to date regarding the scientific knowledge in the field

 The position further involves cell and molecular biology research.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Experience in working with one or more of the following techniques and tools is requiered:

  • Primary cell cultures (at least myoblast and adipocytes)
  • PCR and qPCR
  • Purification and use of recombinant viral vectors
  • Recombinant DNA technologies 
  • Immunoblotting
  • Handling laboratory animal models

Experience of handling laboratory animals and phenotypic characterization of mice with regard to energy metabolism and skeletal muscle physiology (minimum FELASA B certification) is requiered. Excellent ability to communicate in English (spoken and written) is required. Knowledge in Swedish is advantageous.
Due to the nature of project, experience with bioinformatics, analysis of next generation sequencing data and handling of large data sets is advantageous.

Emphasis will be placed on personal qualities as responsibility, flexibility, teamwork and ability to solve problems. The ideal candidate should be ambitious, strongly motivated and independent to develop the project and successfully troubleshoot emerging issues.
