The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) is a department with a strong focus on basic science. CMB conducts research and education in cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, cancer and infection biology.

Division
The central scientific interest of the Chien lab is to understand heart development at the molecular and cellular level, with the ultimate goal of applying the developmental principles, logic, pathways, technology, and model systems to unravel human heart disease. We use several different approaches to study heart development, including in vitro stem cell differentiation models, in vivo cardiac morphogenesis studies in developing embryos and cardiac regeneration in various animal models.

Duties
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher with a strong background in developmental biology, cellular and molecular biology and regenerative medicine. The research project will focus on the study of cardiac regeneration with an emphasis on fibrosis reversal in the aquatic salamander, newt. Cardiac regeneration capacity will be assessed following injury to the newt heart and molecular and cellular basis of the injury response will be investigated. The applicant will be responsible for setting up and organizing the project. The project involves extensive interdepartmental collaborations, so background knowledge and experience in establishing and maintaining collaborations will be crucial.

Entry requirements

A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.

The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in Molecular Biology from an elite institute with a strong publication record in top-ranking journals and at least two years of previous postdoctoral experience. The candidate must have extensive training in the handling, breeding and the anatomy of aquatic salamanders. Broad experience with amphibian cell culture, immunohistochemistry, qPCR analysis, cloning, FACS and preparation of RNA sequencing libraries is required.

The candidate must be fluent in English (both spoken and written), and demonstrate excellent communication skills, documented by participation in international meetings. Basic knowledge of Swedish is a plus. The successful candidate must have a strong problem solving analytical ability as well as being flexible and well structured. The candidate´s personal skills will be highly valued.

Bases of assessment
We stress research expertise when assessing applicants.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.
