Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för biovetenskaper och näringslära, Lindström (LLI)

The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including bioorganic chemistry, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Research group
A Postdoctoral position is open in Dr Linda Lindström’s research group. The research group focuses on research to further understand the risk for women diagnosed with breast cancer to die from their disease. This is important because breast cancer is the most common cancer and in mid-life one of the main causes of death in women. Breast cancer is however a diverse disease both in the sense of metastatic capacity as well as time to fatal disease. In particular for some breast cancer subtypes, patients have a long-term increased risk to die from the disease spanning more than 20 years after diagnosis. The research group uses a variety of approaches in their studies, but the research is mainly based on patient cohorts and clinical studies. The group frequently collaborates with international research groups.

We are currently initiating several research projects. In one project we will continue our research initiatives on breast cancer intra-tumor heterogeneity as associated with aggressive breast cancer disease. In this project we will annotate information on gene expression on single breast cancer tumor cells (single-cell sequencing). We will also annotate two clinical trials with genetic information and tumor characteristics to determine which factors that are associated with long-term survival in women diagnosed with breast cancer. The goal of the projects is to identify patients at high and very low risk for fatal disease in order to already at diagnosis be able to improve clinical management and increase survival for breast cancer patients.

The Postdoctoral researcher will have an important role in the project and be responsible for logistics, planning, as well as statistical analytical work, scientific article writing and data presentation etc.

The position is for 2 years with a possible extension after evaluation.

Skills and personality
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate with a clear interest in breast cancer research and statistical analysis. Since the Postdoctoral researcher will work and communicate scientific findings in an interdisciplinary and international environment, good communication and writing skills in English are very important.

It is a clear advantage if the applicant has documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research such as:

  • Documented subject knowledge of breast cancer
  • Analytical skills and documented knowledge or experience in statistical programs (such as R, SAS etc)
  • Knowledge in high throughput analysis such as sequence or gene expression analysis
  • Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to the project

Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
