The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 9 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

Division
A Postdoctoral Research Scientist is available within the team of Associate Professor Andreas Matussek in the research group of Associate Professor Christian Giske at the Department of Laboratory Medicine. Within the Division of Clinical Microbiology, the group conducts basic and translational studies of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The successful applicant will join a team focusing on molecular epidemiology and virulence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and improved clinical diagnostics of enteropathogenic bacteria.

The group is involved in collaboration with several units both within and outside the hospital, and also with international collaborators. The group leader has a central international position in antimicrobial susceptibility testing and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance. In addition, the group consists of a team mainly focusing on STEC virulence and improved diagnostics.

The successful candidate will join a research team consisting of several PhD-students and one postdoctoral researcher plus the team leader. The team has focused on screening of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in clinical specimens and molecular characterization of isolates. Further, the STEC genetic makeup has been related to disease severity and duration of fecal shedding. The planned work will be based on these preliminary findings and whole genome sequencing (WGS) will be a valuable tool to further deepen the insights into the virulence of STEC.

Duties

- Planning and execution and analysis of WGS experiments on of clinical STEC

- Analysis of full genome STEC data of in relation to clinical and epidemiological data

- Planning, execution and analysis of experiments aiming at enhanced diagnostic procedures of STEC in clinical specimens

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

Other requirements:

The person applying for this position should have solid knowledge on molecular biology. The candidate should also have background in bacteriology, more specifically on virulence of enteropathogenic bacteria. Experience with WGS is highly appreciated: more specifically, skills in designing and executing WGS experiments and subsequent data analysis is considered as a significant advantage. In addition, the candidate is expected to have knowledge on using real-time PCR for diagnostic purposes.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.
