Division

Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre (ICMC)
ICMC is a research collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and AstraZeneca.

The goal of the centre is to identify and validate new target molecules within the cardiovascular area and metabolic diseases. Special focus is placed on the stratrategic research areas: Cardiac Regeneration, Islet Health (Diabetes) and Diabetic Nephropathy.

This position offers direct collaborations with the Pharma Industry (i.e. AstraZeneca).

Duties

The successful applicant will work on epigenetics of heart failure including its translational aspects. A substantial part of the work will be in connection with the ongoing Leducq Transatlantic Network of Excellence - Mechanical Triggers to Programmed Cell Death in Cardiomyocytes – and how to prevent their Action in Failing Hearts. The work will be focused on different types of biomechanical stress in vitro and in vivo and its effect on cardiac myocyte survival. This work includes work with genetically altered animals, stem cell biology, CRISPR and next generation sequencing technologies, including RNA seq and single cell RNA seq, with the aim to identify epigenetic mechanisms underlying heart failure.

We are looking for a Researcher who has a strong work ethic, passion for solving difficult questions & challenges with the ability to design, plan, perform, and interpret original experiments in an independent and innovative environment. The candidates should have high integrity and be aware of the multicultural setting they are going to be located at.

Candidates should:

  • It is essential that the candidate has published at least one paper in an excellent peer-reviewed journal, preferably as a first author.
  • Have experience in basic science, in the analysis of epigenetic events and in the generation of genetically altered animals. Experience in stem cell biology and administration is an additional merit.
  • Have a strong background in cardiac myocyte biology. Experiences in cell death pathways is an asset but not mandatory.
  • Knowledge in zebrafish genetics is an add on
  • Good experience in supervision of PhD students and master students is an asset but not mandatory.

Necessary entry requirements

A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD in Medical/Biomedical sciences no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

The candidate shall have extensive experiences in the analysis of epigenetic events such as genomic DNA methylation, sequencing, CRISPR, animal models as well as cardiovascular related cell culture (both primary culture and cell lines), basic molecular biology and biochemistry.
