The Petter Brodin research group located at Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm and affiliated with the unit of infectious diseases, Karolinska Institutet, develops and applies experimental and computational research methods for systems-level analyses of human immune systems. The aim of the group is to understand human immune system variation in health and disease (Brodin & Davis, Nat. Rev Imm 2017) and the regulatory mechanisms underlying such variation and adaptation to environmental influences (Brodin et al, Cell 2015). A particular focus of the group is to understand immune systems development in early life.
The current project will be focused on the analysis of epigenetic imprinting of human immune cells during the first weeks and months of life. To this end, we have established a unique birth cohort followed with longitudinal blood samples during the first three years of life. We are FACS-sorting immune cells and analyzing epigenetic changes by ATAC-seq (Buenrostro, et al Nat Methods, 2013). The data has already been generated and the current project is focused on analyzing longitudinal changes in epigenetic signatures and comparing these between children facing different environmental conditions. Another important focus of the current position is the development and application of novel single-cell data analysis methods for the analysis of mass cytometry data acquired from the same time-points from these children.
Skills and personal qualities
The successful candidate should have a PhD in the physical or life sciences. The successful candidate must be thriving in interdisciplinary environments, able and comfortable to work independently, being results oriented and able to meet deadlines. The candidate must have excellent communication skills in English. Experience of analyzing various types of transcriptomic or genomic datasets, generated by sequencing-based methods is important. Experience in analyzing ATAC-seq data in particular is ideal, but not an absolute requirement. Strong knowledge and experience of high-dimensional data analysis, statistics and machine learning is essential, preferably using Python and/or R languages, given the use of these languages in our existing data analysis pipelines.

A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances. The position will be in the form of a 2+2 year postdoctoral employment.
