Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för kvinnors och barns hälsa

The Department is organized in 10 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Surgery, Neuropediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Neuropsychiatry (KIND), Reproductive and Perinatal Health. The divisions have separate scientific profiles and vary in size and have several research groups, dealing with both basic and clinical science.

The position will be based at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. CMM is a highly interactive center for translational medical research. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with and learn various scientific and technical skills from a dynamic team of researchers at the Center.

Research group
The ultimate goal of the research within our group is to identify genes and mechanisms that regulate human bone growth using novel molecular screening methods and in vitro and in vivo models, as well as to identify effective treatment for these disorders. We work with clinically characterized rare cases of severe idiopathic growth failure and use advanced molecular approaches to identify the underlying genetic causes. Fundamental biological roles of identified genes and gene variants are explored using in vitro and in vivo rodent models of longitudinal bone growth. Discoveries of new genetic mutations and understanding pathogenic mechanisms underlying growth disorders would enable development of targeted diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic methods and expand our knowledge on skeletal development, physiology, and pathology. We now need to expand our research team with new members with experience in the field or important complementary expertise.

The succesful candidate will study the mechanisms that regulate skeletal development and growth using a combination of genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatic approaches, cell based methods, and animal models.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for carrying out postdoctoral research may be granted to persons living in other countries who come to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships from KI. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher.

Highly talented and motivated individuals with either a Ph.D. or a qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate are encouraged to apply. Experience in cell culture and molecular biology is required. Experience with protein chemistry is preferred but not a requirement. Similarly, experience with mouse work is a plus, but not a requirement. Applicants should have a good academic record, including publications in international journals.

Type of scholarship
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt.

The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:

  1. Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj )
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or studentorganisations, parental leave or similar circumstances

The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.
