Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för medicin, Huddinge

Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre - ICMC is a research collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and AstraZeneca.

The goal of the center is to identify and validate new target molecules within the cardiovascular area and metabolic diseases. Special focus is placed on the strategic research areas: Cardiac Regeneration, Islet Health (Diabetes) and Diabetic Nephropathy.

This position offers direct collaborations with the Pharma Industry (i.e. AstraZeneca).

The research aims to investigate molecular regulators of liver and adipose tissue inflammation and function in the context of obesity and diabetes.

The division is also involved in education, with respect to metabolic disease, biochemistry, immunology and biomedical laboratory science.

We would like to include an assistant professor to work in our group led by Myriam Aouadi. The research projects aim to understand the transcriptional regulation of genes in liver macrophages in metabolic diseases and to understand the mechanisms for the links between obesity and Insulin resistance. The studies are performed in human tissues, animal rodent models as well as in vitro in cell models.

The assistant professor will serve as project leader, responsible for coordination of projects, and will actively apply for grants, write scientific manuscripts, and present the research results nationally and internationally. Supervision of PhD-students, postdoctoral fellows and technicians is also expected.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period. The successful candidate should have also conducted postdoctoral studies and published peer-reviewed articles as a lead author in the field of Diabetes.

It’s desirable if the applicant has previously conducted research in metabolism and inmmunology, has a structured and independent approach, accuracy and good analytical skills. The applicant should also have proven competence in analysis of gene regulation/expression (e.g. RNA-extraction, cDNA synthesis, qPCR, siRNA, ChIP-seq and GRO-seq,), analysis of protein expression (e.g. Western blot, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, RIA, enzymatic activity assays). Strong experience in animal experiments performing functional tests in mice and rats is required (e.g. oral glucose tolerance tests and insulin tolerance tests, subcutaneous/intraperitoneal injection, etc.).

Good knowledge of English, written and spoken, is a requirement.

Bases of assessment

We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants. Particular emphasis will be placed on the ability to work in a team, scientific rigor, and capacity to clearly transfer knowledge.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The application is to be submitted through the MyNetwork recruitment system.

An Assistant professor position is a fixed-term position. The first employment should be two years, with a possible extension of two years after evaluation.
