A two-year post-doctoral position is available at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB), Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. The project deals primarily with over-expression, purification, crystallization and structure determination of human membrane proteins involved in the generation of lipid mediators of inflammation.
The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team and the position represents an opportunity for a postdoctoral scientist to develop their expertise as well as broaden their experience. The major interests of the lab are in membrane protein structure and function. We combine structural techniques such as macromolecular crystallography with biophysical, biochemical and computational methods to investigate the structural basis of catalysis. The lab has all necessary equipment and access to facilities needed for the project, including a core facility for protein science. We have periodic access to beamlines at ESRF (France), Diamond (UK), BESSY and DESY (Germany).
Chemistry II is an inter-disciplinary division of medical research including researchers specializing in structural biology, biochemistry and biophysics, in vitro and in vivo models of disease and mass-spectrometry platforms for metabolomics.
The successful candidate will perform all aspects of macromolecular structure determination, including molecular cloning, protein expression and purification, protein crystallization, X-ray data collection at synchrotron light sources and subsequent processing. The candidate will also participate in biochemical and biophysical confirmation of function, analysis of data and writing of associated manuscripts for publication.
Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying. One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.
The candidates should hold a PhD, be motivated to independently solve problems and a have a strong background in biochemistry or structural biology. Experience with protein expression, purification and biochemical characterization is required. Prior experience in membrane protein biochemistry and computational skills such as a familiarity with the LINUX operating system will be added advantages.
Type of scholarship
Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within four years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt. The amount is set for twelve months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis.
