Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för neurobiologi, vårdvetenskap och samhälle

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2017 of 470 million SEK. It comprises eight divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division of Neurogeriatrics
The Division is focused on translational research in neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer disease.

The Project and Research Group
The project aims to harness the BRICHOS domain for treatment of Alzheimer disease. We have found that the BRICHOS domain has a unique mechanism of action – it redirects the fibrillation pathway so that generation of toxic oligomers from the amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) is markedly reduced. Recent data show that recombinant BRICHOS can pass the blood-brain barrier and we will now study how administration of BRICHOS to state-of-the-art APP-knock-in Alzheimer mouse models affects neuropathology and behavior. Two groups, one group focused on protein aggregation and one group with expertise on mouse models of Alzheimer disease will run the project jointly. Currently the groups have about 20 members including professors, senior scientists, post-docs and graduate students with a broad international background.

The postdoc candidate is expected to have a strong drive to pursue experimental research, and an ambitious and innovative attitude. The projects are pursued in collaboration with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are necessary. Very good ability to speak and write English is also a requirement.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The term can be extended under special circumstances.

A PhD in (bio)medicine, cell biology, biotechnology or similar topic is required. The postdoc to be recruited needs to have strong experience of working with mouse models, in particular using invasive methods, and a good knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases. Experience from behavioral studies, immuno-histochemistry and immunofluorescence methods and studies of neuroinflammation is qualifying.
