Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för mikrobiologi, tumör- och cellbiologi, Engstrand, CTMR

The Center for Translational Microbiome Research (CTMR) started in January 2016 as a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) and Ferring Pharmaceuticals. The center builds on a deep understanding of translational microbiome research and has established a broad technical, biological, clinical and epidemiological platform for studying complex microbiological communities in well-defined human materials. A part of the infrastructure at Karolinska Institutet is established within the Clinical Genomics facility at SciLifeLab with access to high-throughput next- generation sequencing capacity. The collaboration forms a solid foundation for understanding the contribution of the microbiome to normal physiology and pathophysiology and opens opportunities for development of novel therapies to address gastroenterology, reproductive health and neonatology.

The Center aims at creating a scientific translational environment with a broad interdisciplinary approach to the interface between clinical epidemiology and the microbiological, immunological and genetic aspects of the human microbiome and its association to health and disease.

The main focus for the position is phage therapy and microbiota in women’s health. The candidate is expected to play a leading role in generating scientific hypothesis, conducting experiments, analysing data, preparing presentation of results and manuscript. The candidate should also be able to supervise students and to work independently. The candidate will work on several projects related to phage therapy and microbiota in women's health. These projects involve a range of microbiology and molecular biology techniques, including bacterial phage experiments, microbiota culture and analysis, including women's infections and health field.

Entry requirements
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with documented expertise in microbiota and related research. A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period. A minimum of three years of international postdoctoral experience is a strong merit.

Bases of assessment
Due to the interests and on-going projects in our center, previous research experience and documented practical and technical skills related to women’s health is required, including: 1. Vaginal microbiota, especially translational studies with collaboration of clinic. 2. Human papillomavirus, related infections and cancer development, 3. Bacterial phage isolation and phage therapy, 4. Genetic editing of pathogenes.

The applicant is expected to have published numerous original scientific articles as the lead author. The applicant should have good communication skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team of researchers. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, as well as ability and previous experience of laboratory work.
