The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Duties
The candidate is expected to perform leading, independent research in the area of ageing biology in malaria and other infections. The overall aim of the work is to make valuable contributions to the understanding of hidden costs of infections in the host. Theoretical knowledge and expertise in ageing and infection research is required, especially experience in telomere biology, oxidative stress, host and parasite genomics, molecular epidemiology and ecology. The project includes human and experimental animal models, and will require molecular as well as statistical and bioinformatics skills. The work includes planning and running scientific projects as well as applying for external research funding. The candidate will also participate in educational tasks including student supervision, lectures, seminars and course leadership.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.

We seek for a scientist that possesses a PhD degree (or equivalent) with a minimum of two years postdoctoral experience.

The candidate is expected to master basic and applied molecular biology tools such as isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), DNA and RNA extraction, DNA cloning, PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, microsatellites, PAGE and gel documentation, cloning, laser dissection microscopy, DNA finger printing, phylogenetic analysis. In addition, the candidate should be able to perform bioinformatics and statistical analyses (including general linear mixed models). Previous research in molecular biology of malaria and/or ageing is a highly considered merit.

Bases of assessment
The applicant must hold a PhD or a equal qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate as well as been experienced in molecular biology of ageing. We stress scientific expertise and academic skills, particularly demonstrated excellence in research in biomedical area. Strong communication and collaborative skills will be preferable during assessment. The position will involve several national and international collaborations why the applicant should have good skills in communicating in written and spoken English.

In connection with the appointment of Assistant Professor, we will accord special weight to academic skills, particularly demonstrated excellence in research.
