Department of Clinical Science and Education, Södersjukhuset, pursues undergraduate education, research education and internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and injuries. The goal of all activities is to improve human health. The department has about 50 employees, 80 graduate students, 140 affiliated and a turnover of 68 million.

The successful candidate will become a part of the Neuro Cardio Metabol Group. The major research focus of the group is on the cardiovascular and neurological complications of diabetes with special focus on (mainly stroke), and cognitive decline. We also work on the identification of new therapies with special focus on the effects mediated by incretins. Our research is translational as we use preclinical experimental models and perform clinical research with randomized clinical studies and epidemiological methods (registry studies).

Successful applicant will be required to design and oversee the preclinical research projects related to neurological complications of diabetes. The applicant will also be required to act as a supervisor for post-doctoral fellows and doctoral students and be actively involved in the educational activity at KI.
Following tasks are entailed in the position: Design, perform, oversight and management of all in vivo activities, apply for competitive research grants, write and submit ethical applications and write  scientific reports. Manage the histology laboratory and microscopy platforms, ensure smooth operation of laboratory facilities and control supplies. Organise meetings and journal clubs.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.

The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in Neurobiology and have an extensive experience in preclinical stroke research, especially in diabetes animal models (both practical and theoretical). The applicant is required to have an in-depth knowledge of experimental stroke (MCAO model) and diabetes models (both induced and genetic) in mice and rats.
The research subjects of our group also involve preclinical studies of impaired olfaction, olfactory memory and cognition in diabetes. Therefore, the experience of studies of olfaction and olfactory memory in diabetic rodents will greatly benefit the application. The certificate of animal experimentation (FELASA C or equivalent) is also required.
Extensive knowledge of immunohistochemistry and microscopy (stereology methods, morphometries, fluorescent and confocal microscopy) applied to the stroke-damaged and intact rodent brain both under healthy and diabetic conditions is also a must for the position.

The group is closely involved in collaborative projects with the industry. Therefore, an important requirement for the position is the ability to work with Big Pharma industries, including handling contacts and reporting.
The research line of the group is at the intersection between neuroscience and diabetes research. Therefore, an important established network of contacts with academic and industrial partners in both research areas is highly required.
