The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 researchers, of which 24 are full professors and 65 PhD students.

Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
The research group of prof. Henrik Ehrsson has funding available for a 4 year PhD position in cognitive imaging neuroscience (www.ehrssonlab.se). Our work focuses on how we come to experience that we own our body, and why we experience that we are located inside our physical bodies. To address these issues we use a combination of behavioral and functional magnetic imaging methods. Our laboratory has expertise in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and behavioral approaches (including virtual reality technology). We have local access to three state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI scanners, a MEG scanner and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and various pain stimulation devices.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
The PhD project will investigate the role of interoception in the sense of ownership of one’s body using pain as a model system of interoception. The aim of the project is to specifically investigate how interoceptive (pain) signals integrate with the ‘exteroceptive’ signals from the body (vision, touch and proprioception) to provide a richer sense of body ownership and facilitate unity of bodily self. The candidate is expected to work within the general framework of the research project, but will be encouraged to formulate his or her own ideas and proposals for experiments. The project uses rubber hand illusion, full-body illusions, psychophyscis, pain stimulation and advanced functional magnetic resonance imaging analyses on healthy human participants.

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  • Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities
The candidate must have a master's degree in medicine, psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, or medical engineering. He or she should have a strong and documented interest in cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging techniques. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual that can actively contribute with own ideas and proposals for experimental designs. Proficiency in oral and written English is necessary, as are good social skills. The candidate should have a strong track record of successful internship projects. The candidate should have strong programming skills; good knowledge of Matlab and SPM is a plus.

Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time. The doctoral student will receive financial support during his or her doctoral education in the form of an employment.

The earliest start date is September 1st and the latest is November 30th ,2019.
