Karolinska Institutet, NVS, Aging Research Center

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2017 of 470 million SEK. It comprises eight divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The senior research position is at the Aging Research Center (ARC), an interdisciplinary research center on older people and aging in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University.
ARC has an opening for a senior researcher in its social gerontology group. The group uses cross-sectional and longitudinal data from interview studies and registers to study aging and older people’s living conditions. Currently, the research group is working with multiple scientific questions on topics such as older people’s health; health trends and health- and social care at the population level; how early living conditions and health-related behaviors, both in childhood and adulthood, are associated with health later in life and multiple aspects of inequalities at the group level.

The focus of the position is research and teaching. The researcher will participate in forming and developing the research group’s work on social aspects of aging, health, health behaviors and living conditions of older people from both a life-course and a population perspective. Employment as senior researcher involves quantitative research in the areas described above, and responsibility for courses, teaching and supervising at the undergraduate and advanced levels at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University.

Entry requirements
To be employed as a senior researcher, a candidate must demonstrate both scientific and pedagogical competence. The applicant must have a doctoral degree; an educational background in Epidemiology, Public Health or a Social Science subject; and extended competence in Social Gerontology. Candidates should have documented experience of statistical analyses of register data and data from large surveys. The candidate is expected to be an independent researcher with extensive knowledge in using and interpreting longitudinal data. A good track record of publication in international journals within the field of Social Gerontology is particularly meritorious. The candidate we seek has good communication skills, the ability to collaborate effectively both within and outside academia, and demonstrate good knowledge of both Swedish and English.

The applicant should be docent and have formal studies in university-level teaching and good pedagogical competence, experience with course planning and examination, and experience supervising students at both the undergraduate and advanced levels. Collaboration with groups outside the university and participation in activities outside academia—such as writing reports, undertaking special (e.g., governmental) investigations and publishing reports based on the results, and planning and conducting seminars for a wide range of audiences— are meritorious.

Bases of assessment
Merits will be given the following weight in the assessment process: scientific competence (3); pedagogical competence (2); leadership, development, and collaborative competence (1).
