Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för medicin, Solna, Infectious Diseases Unit

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

The Petter Brodin research group located at Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm is a part of the Unit of infectious diseases, Karolinska Institutet. The group develops and applies experimental and computational research methods for systems-level analyses of human immune systems. The aim of the team is to understand immune systems variation in health and disease and the regulatory mechanisms underlying such variation and adaptation to environmental influences. Another important focus is the development of immune systems in early life.

The current project will be focused on the development and application of sequencing-based epigenetic profiling (ATAC-seq) and modern microbiome analyses, both metagenomics, 16S rRNA analyses and targeted analyses such as a phage-display method for antibody profiling. The project will involve both the application of existing methods as the ones above, and method development.

Entry requirements
The successful candidate must have a PhD in the physical or life sciences and postdoc experience. The successful candidate must be thriving in interdisciplinary environments, able and comfortable to work independently, being results oriented and able to meet deadlines. The candidate must have excellent communication skills in English. Strong experience of using multiple NGS applications is essential, and epigenetic profiling by ATAC-seq in particular is critical, preferably using primary immune cells. Since one important analysis involves antibody profiling by phage display methodologies experience of such methods including library amplification, evaluation and serum profiling is important. Familiarity with data analyses procedures for such NGS based methods and applying pipelines of scripts developed in the group is essential.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Documented domain knowledge of relevance to the research area above

  • Expressed interest in the Project

  • Documented experience of relevant technologies involved in the planned Project.

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

Application process
The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.

At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
