Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics

Division
The research at the division of Biomaterials focuses on developing new methods and molecular tools for biological research using novel materials and bioengineering. Currently, the methods are based on novel biomaterials such as polymers or DNA nanostructures. The division is in particular interested in techniques that help us understand how cells signal to each other and interact with their microenvironment, and how this affects how tissues develop and regenerate.

Duties
The recruited professor will be primarily responsible for performing world class research within the field of molecular systems biophysics; meaning an experimentally focused position with a focus on studies on larger, multi-molecular, self-assembled systems of biomolecules, with a considerable emphasis on methods comprising how such systems could be artificially designed and produced. Examples of subjects could be: design of novel complex probes, or molecular tools, for example bio-nanotechnology, to create novel methods to obtain more knowledge on biology on the nanometer scale. The main aims of the research field are both methods development and engineering molecular systems of biomolecules but also the usage of these methods and systems for investigations of basic scientific problems in biology.

The duties include teaching primarily at second- and third- level education at the department, including supervision of PhD students and post-docs.

It is expected that the employee will take responsibility for the management of her/his research team, and initiate teaching in the field. The successful candidate is expected to actively support the department´s development to become a strong academic and scientific environment with collaborations within and outside the department, initiating seminars and other scientific interactions and to assume appropriate positions of leadership at the department and division levels.

Entry requirements
All professors at Karolinska Institutet must demonstrate scientific as well as pedagogical competence. We are looking for a researcher with a high level of competence in research and with a great interest in developing the subject area of molecular systems biophysics. The applicant should be a nationally leading and internationally established researcher in the subject field. The applicant must have high quality publications in leading international journals over the past ten years and have the potential to become one of the leading international researchers in the field. A proven record of methods development and synthesis of molecular systems, and the use of these methods in biological research is required.

Academic qualifications for this position include a strong record of peer-reviewed publications in the field, demonstrated excellence in teaching, supervision of PhD students, a track record of acquiring external funding, and a record of collaborative science. The candidate should demonstrate significant leadership, networking and administrative abilities.

Bases of assessment
The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (1), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).

The applications will be reviewed by external reviewers in English. All the submitted documents shall therefor be written in English.

The application is to be submitted through Varbi recruitment system.
