Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Solna, Immunology and Allergy division

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The Division of Immunology and Allergy consists of five research groups and two research teams that do experimental and translational immunology and allergy research using mouse and non-human primate models, different in vitro systems as well as patient studies and participate in clinical trials. We are located in the modern offices and well equipped laboratory space in Bioclinicum, the research building of the new Karolinska Hospital.

Duties
The Smed-Sorensen lab studies the role and function of dendritic cells, monocytes and macrophages in the respiratory system in health and disease. The translational immunological research is performed in an interdisciplinary setting with strong collaborations with clinical departments as well as national and international research groups. The current project is focused on functional and transcriptional studies of immune cells in lung lavage, lung tissue, lung-draining lymph nodes and blood from healthy volunteers as well as from patients with different forms of the inflammatory, granulomatous disease sarcoidosis that primarily affects the lungs. Key methods involve processing of human tissue samples, flow cytometry, FACS sorting, transcriptomics and functional assays.

Entry requirements
We are seeking a highly motivated early-career scientist with skills and expertise in immunology.  Applicants need to demonstrate a strong competence in running projects independently but also show excellent abilities for teamwork and cooperation within a dynamic group of scientists with broad expertise. Proven ability to write scientific articles and orally present results is required. Excellent communication skills in English are needed, as the group and work environment is international and we have an extensive network of international collaborations.

One or more of the following skills are also required:

  • - Experience with cell culture work and processing of blood and tissue samples
  • - Experience with immunological methods including functional assays
  • - Experience with advanced multicolor flow cytometry
  • - Experience with performing FACS, including single-cell sorts, without supervision
  • - Experience with processing cells for RNA sequencing
  • - Experience with bioinformatical analysis

Experience with human mucosal immunology and dendritic cell and monocyte biology is an advantage but not a requirement.
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  •  A cover letter summarizing your research interests, previous experience, and motivation for applying for the position (maximum one page).[ASS1]
  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
